Iowa
State Cyclones Football came into Iowa State’s life in 1878 only as a
recreational sport. It wasn’t until 1892 does it make its way to an organized
group of athletes. The first team ever at Iowa State finished 6-1 beating their
first rival the University Of Iowa. The first coach was named Johnny Majors.
His Iowa State football team was predicted to finish last in the Big Eight. But
they over came the odds and finished with a bowl bid to play in the Sun Bowl.
Unfortunately they lost 33-15. But it is the fact that they made it that sets
them apart from everybody else.
Once predicted to finish at the bottom they finished at the
top. ISU has had a rough series of losses in bowl games. They lost 30-31
against Georgia Tech in the Liberty Bowl. They then lost 24-14 against North
Carolina State in the Peach Bowl. Iowa State then lost in the Hall of Fame Bowl
against Texas A&M University. Iowa State was predicted to win big time,
but ended up losing to the underdog with a final score of 28-12.Just when things
couldn’t possibly get worse they lose in the Independence Bowl to Alabama
14-13. The next loss would come in the 2005 Houston Bowl when Iowa State lost
24-27 against Texas Christian University. What a rough series of years! In all
bowl games Iowa State holds a losing record of 3-9. Iowa State has won 2
conference championships in its entire history. One in 1911 and again in 1912
back to back. Other than those two they have struggled to be on top again since
then. They have also only one division championship in 2004.
The name cyclone really took shape in an
article way back then in the newspaper. Calling the way the Cyclones play like
a “Cyclone” and ever since then the name just seemed to fit the way the team
played. Though it does seem as though the way they play has simmered down. With
the many losses in Bowl Game losses and the conference championship games. You
would expect the Cyclones to be better then they look now. But in reality the
Iowa State Cyclones are just another over rated team fighting to prove that
they may not be the best NCAA team but they are fighting to prove that they
aren’t the worst. Hard as it may seem to believe.
